Bishop Vaughan opened its doors in September 1966. Previously grant maintained, the school became voluntary-aided in April 1999. Many parts of the school building have been upgraded and refurbished in recent years and there is a wide range of specialist facilities for the curriculum and extensive sporting provision. Although most pupils are Catholic, a small proportion is practising Christians of other denominations. All pupils study the national curriculum with access to a variety of specialist AS, A levels and vocational courses in the sixth form. A foundation year for all New Year seven pupils acts as 'an appropriate transition from primary school' and enables individual assessment of abilities to take place more fairly. All year 10 pupils study Welsh, with GCSE Welsh available to interested pupils. Latin is offered as an extra examination subject out of normal hours. All pupils receive religious education throughout their seven years. This school encourages a pervasive atmosphere of mutual respect, courtesy, friendliness and optimism together with care for the environment and property.
