Background:
Established in 1984 as an additional Welsh-medium secondary school in West Glamorgan. Sited on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, the school serves a wide catchment area incorporating the Llwchwr, Afan and Lower Tawe Valleys as well as Swansea. About nine in 10 go on to post-16 education or training. Over-subscribed, with school responding to increasing demand for Welsh-medium education; the only provider within the local education authority area. Apart from English and some science in senior school, all lessons in Welsh; three in four pupils, however, come from non-Welsh-speaking homes. Schools Curriculum Award in 1990. Sporting and cultural visits and exchanges: Canada, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Holland, Finland and Turkey. Pupils have won places in National Youth Theatre, Choir and Orchestra; national honours in rugby, cricket, hockey, athletics, netball, gymnastics, swimming, karate and chess. National success for teams in sporting, cultural and public-speaking competitions.
